  2. The African Prisons Project began in 2004, when Nottingham University law student Alexander McLean visited Luzira Maximum Security Prison in Uganda during his gap year. The prison, built by the British in 1927 to hold 600, held about five times as many. Typically, a six foot by ten foot cell might hold ten inmates who were forced to sleep on the floor. In Mulago hospital where Alexander met prisoners for the first time, he found one memorable prisoner was in a deep coma, lying in his own waste, still handcuffed to the bed, with the guard nowhere to be seen. Other patients refused food and drink to avoid soiling themselves as there were no bedpans or commodes. After identifying a need for the provision of hygienic living conditions, better healthcare, and basic educational services, Alexander returned to England to fundraise. When he returned that year, he installed plumbing, lighting and refurbished the prison hospital. He revisted in 2005 and created a library in the main section of the upper prison, as well as refurbished the clinic and death row at Luzira women's prison. The final of a football tournament that Alexander sponsored was played and the sugar and soap that the inmates had requested as prizes were distributed. These facilities were opened by the Arch Bishop of Uganda, H.E. Cardinal Wamala.

Children of female inmates are imprisoned up to the age of four.
Alexander then visited a youth detention centre in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Most of the children here, aged eight to sixteen, had committed crimes such as 'causing a palaver' or loitering. One fourteen year old was locked up with her baby, who was only a few months old. The inmates diet of rice lead to constipation and malnutrition. The project provided them with farming tools and seeds to enable them to grow their own fruit and vegetables, allowing them to supplement their diet and see that they were capable of working and achieving.

Our most recent project at Kamiti Maximum security prison in Kenya was our greatest yet. We transported 37,000 books and refurbished a 90 bed sick bay. The prison authorities employed a professional librarian to run the library and expand the resources of books and information technology. After returning from Kenya in October 2006, Alexander was delighted to be presented with the 'UK Charity Volunteer of the Year 2006' award by Price Edward at an award ceremony in London.

The objective of the APP is the promotion of education and health in African Prisons, through the construction of libraries and renovation of medical facilities within the prison environment. Fundamentally, we aim to offer hope and compassion to people who have been marginalized and abadoned by much of society. Though they may have committed crimes, more than half of prisoners have not had a trial. Those that are tried do not usually have a lawyer or jury and are frequently given the death penalty for crimes such as mutiny, cowardice and robbery.

Alexander McLean: UK Charity Volunteer of the Year 2006.
We believe in rehabilitation, giving people a second chance and an oppurtunity to recognise and compensate for the past. One of the greatest obstacles to reform is that inmates very often leave prison in a far worse off position than when they entered it. With no professional prospects, no place to go, or even no clothes with which to return to their families, there is little choice for them to return to a life of crime. Thus, a vicious cycle perpetuates itself. It is this cycle we strive to break.

Since the prison clinic in Uganda was refurbished, a laboratory was added to it by the Uganda Prison Service, which means means that many diseases can be diagnosed on site. The prison libraries in Uganda are proving a huge success, and whilst A and O level results have improved, our greatest sense of achievement came from the fact that inmates can now study to degree level whilst in prison.

The work of the APP is ongoing with the plan to carry out extensive prison hospital and library refurbishments, covering the whole of Zambia. Currently, inmates have access to no inpatient medical facility, many women are left to give birth in prison cells and many inmates die in their cells too. We hope to oversee the construction of a 100,000 book library to provide books for inmates to prepare for A levels and O levels whilst in prison, as well as to learn about trades. A day care centre and creche will provide a place of respite for babies and children in prison with their mums, somewhere to go during the day to during the day to escape from the bars and guards and guns. To enable us to do so, We hope to raise significant financial donations as well as collect medical equipment, books, computers sports equipment and musical instruments. The retirement of the Commissioner of Prisons has delayed these plans somewhat, however we are hoping to carry out this work in 2008.

Michuzi niwakilishie kwa Mkuu wa Magereza - This ca be done in TZ too.

  11. To earn a bachelor degree does not make you innocent if you guilty, the rule of law works in the way that no one is above the law. If the guy save 50 yrs sentence that mean he is guilty of something. So, since he pursued degree from prison, it doesn't make him qualify for parol? What if he killed someone, what if he raped someone, who if he put alot of peoples lifes in danger... Me and You we don't have infomation to conclude where this guy belongs. So, think before you through your opinions think first. However, i salute him for parsue degree while he was in jail.because alot of people are not in prison, and they cant even have Associate degree if not GED

  15. Hey Mr. me and you.... 2:45 pm go back first to school before you judge people.

People deserve second chance in this world if they redeem. A second chance spiritually means there are no limitations to what you can become. A second chance in a society is possible too even if you are a murderer. If he had no violent past and who knows what happened was a crime of passion though I am not in favor of that but if he has proven that he has been rehabilitate in my opinion 10 years is a good period to pay his burden.

Would you rather see your leaders kill and still walk on the street and nobody can do anything because they control the law? Or would you rather see a person who has redeemed himself, changed and decided to study law in order to be a voice of those who can’t speak for themselves.

I don’t say anyone can walk in and out of jail but just ask yourself how many people who are out in the street they even bother go back to school? How many take their time to help others to know their rights?

  16. Hey Mr people diserv second chance.. Firs, i did not judge the guy, Tanzania court system place judgement that the guy is guilt of something. Does he diserv second chance? May be no. We don't know at this moment what did he committed. Tanzania follow civil law, that mean there is statute to follow. Most people in jail need the second chance, so i we going to give each prisoners parole? What will be the qualification of giving someone parole? i bet you will say degree, then Kasusura better work on his degree too. Law is a law, it doesnt matter what is your color, where you was born, what is your life status and so on. Unless if Tanzania follow biblical law, then we can forgive as many criminals as posible, other than that me and you we dont have power to say who qualify for parole because of degree he earn while he is in the cage.
