Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Michael Froman traveled to Tanzania July 12-14 with a delegation of senior-level U.S. Government officials as part of a tour throughout Africa. Through as series of meetings with President Kikwete, Prime Minster Pinda, and the Ministers of Energy, Finance, Trade, and the Central Bank Governor, Deputy NSA Froman's visit underscored the United States' commitment to increased engagement with Tanzania on economic growth and development initiatives. The delegation's visit also served to build on President Kikwete's participation in the G8 Summit in Washington this past May and advance Tanzania's role in the G8's New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition.

U.S. Ambassador Alfonso E. Lenhardt noted: "This senior U.S. level visit highlights the strong bilateral relationship between our two countries on many fronts particularly in agriculture, energy and trade, and the United States' commitment to promoting economic growth and trade, both in Tanzania and throughout the East African region."

Exemplifying this spirit of cooperation, Deputy NSA Froman and Prime Minister Pinda signed the Partnership for Growth Joint Country Action Plan on July 13, which serves as a road map for the collaboration of the Tanzanian and U.S. governments, as well as the private sector working together to alleviate key constraints to growth in the sectors of energy and rural roads.

On July 13, Deputy NSA Froman held a roundtable at the U.S. Embassy with young leaders from Tanzania's private sector to hear their views on how the U.S. can best partner with Tanzania's youth to further economic development through private sector expansion and initiatives. He participated in an energy sector luncheon with Minister of Energy Sospeter Muhongo, Symbion Power, Pike Electric, and Regent Ltd. To promote agricultural sector growth, he participated in a dinner with Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Cooperatives Christopher Chiza; Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister's office Peniel Lyimo, Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) officials, and other Tanzanian private sector leaders.

On July 14, Deputy NSA Froman met with Minister of Industry, Trade and Marketing Dr. Abdallah O. Kigoda. To promote trade and entrepreneurship, he conducted a site visit to women's partnership company Marvelous Limited, met with board members of the American Chamber of Commerce, and visited the Symbion Power Plant in Dar es Salaam.

Traveling with Froman were: Michael Camunez, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Market Access and Compliance; Florie Liser, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Africa; Gayle Smith, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Democracy and Development, National Security Staff; Grant Harris, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs, National Security Staff; MiMi Alemayehou, Executive Vice President for the Overseas Private Investment Corporation; Earl Gast, Assistant Administrator for Africa, Unites States Agency for International Development; and, Reuben Brigety, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Department of State.

After Tanzania, the delegation traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend the African Union Summit, then to Kenya, and Nigeria.
