Azania Bank donates 5m/- to support Prostate Cancer Campaign

By Staff Reporter

AZANIA Bank Limited has donated five million shillings to support the Tanzania 50 Plus Prostate Cancer Campaign that seeks to create awareness amongst the general public
.
Speaking during a handover ceremony held at the bank’s Headquarters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Azania Bank Director, MD’s office ( Treasury Management and Business Development ) Mr. Godwin Seiya said his bank is committed to support various Social programs as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in communities where the Azania bank Ltd  operates. He said his bank is in a process of developing a CSR policy that will clearly specify how the bank can support various CSR projects adding that consensus will be reached after consultation with all the share holders of the bank.

He noted that his bank has decided to support the campaign in a bid to sensitize the public to make routine tests at least once a year , adding that through such initiatives it can help minimize risks for many men  who are potential future victims. “Records indicate that Prostate Cancer kills up to 1000 people in Tanzania every year.  Men above 50 are at a greater risk. We at Azania Bank believe that the only way to minimize the risk is through public senstisation.

“We believe with proper information dissemination, victims of prostate cancer can seek medication thus increasing their chances of living,” he added. The Tanzania 50 Plus Campaign Coordinator Dr.Emmanuel Kandusi, a survivor of prostate cancer during the event said many lives will be saved if men decide to undertake voluntary screening at early age between 45 and 50.

“Many people tend to go to hospitals when the disease is at advanced stages. It is imperative for men over 50 years of age to undergo testing for prostate cancer for at least once a year. The earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances of making recovery,” he added. The Southern Africa Human Rights NGO-Network (SAHRiNGON) - Tanzania Chapter Coordinator Martina Kabisama however called upon other companies, corporates and individuals to support the campaign if it is to register positive results to the public at large.
