  1. Transport stakeholders want immediate action taken on road carnage

    By Nasser Kigwangallah

The government should take immediate steps to stamp out the continuous carnage of innocent lives due to avoidable road accidents happening almost daily in the country, stakeholders in the transport industry have said.

The remark was made over the weekend by various speakers during the two days Annual National Convention: `Towards Safe and Efficient Road Transport System` organised by Tanzania Roads Association in Dar es Salaam.

They said there was a dire need to revise existing traffic laws which were hampering efforts of the security forces to root out bad elements among drivers in that some connived with unfaithful traffic officers by bribing them.

`Traffic police should be trained and warned on the dangers of conniving with drivers who bribe them and leave them free even if they had violated traffic regulations,` said Allan Jones, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Road Safety Advisor.

He said this kind of behaviour was damaging the war on reducing road accidents in the country and was contributing very much towards continuous road accidents.

Contributing factors to road accidents which according to Allan, could be avoided were; speeding, following closely each other, careless driving, poor maintenance of vehicles and lack of awareness among pedestrians on how to use roads safely.

``The ministry has taken stringent measures that would ensure constant awareness campaigns were conducted which would create awareness to drivers, pedestrians and the public in general and that would reduce accidents to a greater extent,`` he said.

He suggested that drivers should be educated too and assessed for prompt driving and rewarded for not causing accidents. Reckless driving contributes to almost 80 percent of all accidents that occur in the country.

He warned that our roads should not be used for purposes other than traffic, because if they were used for garages as it is the case in many towns and cities in the country that would create problems to other users.

On her part, Christina Kayoza, the Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads) Head of Road Safety and Environment, said in constructing roads, the issue of road safety was given high priority.

``Tanroads ensures that our roads are safe, efficient and comfortable to road users and have a safe roadway environment,`` she said.

  2. Accidents hike up acute shortage of blood at MNH bank

    2007-12-03 08:55:04
    By Nasser Kigwangallah

People have been urged to donate blood generously to save lives of patients and accident victims who urgently turn out to be in need.

The appeal was made by the Muhimbili National Hospital`s Blood Donor Organiser Saidi Kumbakumba at the Sikh Temple Blood Donation Camp in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

He said blood was a precious item to the human body and it could save life when dispensed in time, but could result in instant loss of life if not given in time.

Kumbakumba said that the MNH Blood Bank was in dire need of blood because of the overwhelming number of accidents and admissions to the hospital.

`We need 50 units of blood at the hospital daily, but because of shortage that number is never achieved, hence our appeal to people to come in great numbers and donate for the noble cause,` he said.

He reassured people that the blood is donated free and given free to patients. No one is asked for money and when such a case arises, it should be reported immediately.

The common procedure is that the patient`s relatives are requested to donate blood to offset the one already given to their patient.

Speaking at the occasion, the Sikh Temple Convener of Health Education Committee, Dr. Kulbir Gupta, said the blood donation to Muhimbili National Hospital was a gesture of goodwill by Sikh Community members of Dar es Salaam.

The event is organised annually as per the Sikh Temple?s Blood Donation Programme which has been going on for the last ten years.

During the event, 33 community members who included seven ladies and 26 men donated 33 units of blood.

This year`s occasion marks the occasion of the martyrdom of Guru Behadur Sahebji, the 9th Guru of the Sikhs.
