The late Prof. Ken Edwards

A Memorial Tribute to a Selfless Leader

by Mussa J. Assad – University of Dar es Salaam Business School

Prof. Joshua Mkhululi [former name Ken Edwards] died on Wednesday 18th March, 2009 at Arusha. He was 64 – a young age by modern standards. It was sudden and unexpected for most of us. It was later explained that he had a liver problem and that was what he succumbed to. But as recent as Monday 16th March 2009 Prof. Ken Edwards had spoken to a mutual friend in Dar es Salaam, full of hope and anticipation of things to come. For this was a person of ideas and implementation. One of his final acts was mobilizing support for establishment of the Africa University of Economic Management to which he devoted a lot of time and resources, especially in the past year.

Therefore, it was with deep sorrow that we received the news of the demise of Prof. Ken Edwards. At the University of Dar es Salaam Business School [formerly the Faculty of Commerce and Management], an institution that is his brainchild, we had a quick meeting to plan our way of honoring this great man. We would be at Arusha to lay him to rest in large numbers – by all means necessary.

Prof. Ken Edwards was born in Jamaica on 22nd January, 1945. He loved and listened to reggae – after all he was a Rastafarian. He had the unique privilege of being a personal friend to Bob Marley with whom they had attended early school together. He was a graduate of California State University and Stanford Graduate School of Business. These are top US schools – a qualification from which would open all doors for a graduate and guaranteed success. However, rather than take a good position across the Atlantic he came home to Africa and initially settled in Dar es Salaam.

Prof. Ken Edwards was a teacher in the true sense of the word – concerned not only with the content and delivery but also the welfare of the student. As a leader his dedication and sense of purpose was unparalleled. He was one of a special kind – giving everything in what he believed in. He was tough and intolerant of lousy conduct but he was fair and just. There are many tales of his feats but at one time there was a case of examination leakage involving only two people – a student and a lecturer. The student was the daughter of a politically powerful person and the lecturer was a good friend of Ken Edwards. To cut a long story short despite the political flak he was subjected to he ensured the student was discontinued from studies and he sacked his friend. How many of us would do this kind of thing?

My personal experience with Prof. Ken Edwards was in 1988 [I had just started as a Tutorial Assistant] after he had left the University of Dar es Salaam. We bumped into each other on the ground floor of the Arts Tower Block Building, Mlimani Main Campus as we approached the lift – a tall jovial person emerges and he says ‘Yea Man’ and I acknowledge the regard with respect. He inquires about my CPA results and he wants to know whether I had admission and scholarship to a Masters programme. He was not formally with the University of Dar es Salaam and he did not have to know how I was doing but this was Ken Edwards. His concern was welfare of the people he cared about and that included everyone. ‘Go buy yourself something’ he says giving me One Thousand Shillings [not a small sum in 1988] as a present upon hearing that I had cleared the CPA 1 examinations single sitting and scooped the top award. He also offered me contacts in the US of Deans and Chairs of Departments to whom he would put a word in consideration for a place for a Masters programme. He was a true leader and an excellent motivator. I am eternally inspired by this gentleman for he was a true gentleman.

I know those of you who had encounters with Prof. Ken Edwards would have your own tales to tell.

During his time at the University of Dar es Salaam he was the inspiring lead in spinning off the Faculty of Commerce and Management from the Department of Administration and Management of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He was the first Dean of the Faculty and what that entailed was - he developed, largely from scratch, the academic programmes, the administrative structures and the staffing required to mount everything that the Faculty of Commerce and Management did and can be proud of today. Of course he had the assistance of some of our oldmen who are now retired. They take credit too but today it is Prof. Ken Edwards’ efforts that we want to recognize. It was, for example, Prof. Ken Edwards who made the solicitation tour of European universities that generated fully funded links with top European universities [KU Lueven, Dublin City University, Lancaster University and Sheffield University, etc] to which most of the staff of the Business School went to study and graduated from.

Prof. Ken Edwards was into sports and was a good trail runner. I recall the Faculty Days when we would do all kinds of sports just to build camaraderie and a close knit family of students and staff. He was very active at the community level - he started and financed a football team for youths at Kunduchi Mtongani. He was literally the sole sponsor, coach and manager. Most of the days, after working hours he would drive all the way to Kunduchi to be with his team. But he would come back to the office afterwards. As a true business academic he also organized the football team members into a cooperative society. His manual on Basic Accounting includes the example of the football team cooperative as a model for organizing a cooperative.

Prof. Ken Edwards worked tirelessly for this country and I must mention one other large contribution that he made to the Accounting profession. He started from the idea stage, solicitation and mobilization of funds, up to implementation the Institute of Accountancy at Arusha and he was its first Principal. This is what took him from Dar es Salaam to Arusha and he dedicated himself to IAA for 22 months without a formal contract and largely unpaid. And this is the sad part that I must highlight. As recent as the end of 2005, nearly 17 years after he left IAA he had not been paid a single cent of his outstanding salaries, his gratuity and any of his entitlements. He trusted people in decision making positions would do justice and they consistently failed to do that! I did his claim on a simple MS Excel model and his dues ran into a large amount of money as at the end of 2005, when we last did the computations. I have the old Excel model with me now on my screen. I am informed that he was offered and had to settle for a small sum of money not long ago. This is not what we would have wanted to pay back somebody who did so much for this country.

But even a sadder note is he never got issued a Tanzanian passport – and he had longed and asked for one. I hear in his final days he could not be taken for immediate medical care partly because he did not have a Tanzanian traveling document. In fact he did not have any other traveling document. He had dedicated himself wholly and truly to this country! I still struggle to see what were the reasons for not issuing this true son of this nation a Tanzanian passport. Many of us are ashamed that this could be perpetrated on a person of his repute. Were it possible to issue a ceremonial passport to the dead many would have petitioned for his case.

We shall overcome this grief of losing Prof. Ken Edwards but we must now consider ways of honoring this great man. And here are some suggestions:

  • A once off commemorative half day of intellectual activity as soon as possible but in any case before the end June 2009 to celebrate what he stood for at the first institution he started and worked with – University of Dar es Salaam Business School. Anticipating a good reception this could turn into the Prof. Ken Edwards Memorial Lecture Series to be held on an annual basis;
Sponsoring the Prof. Ken Edwards Prize for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 Overall Best Students in the Bachelor of Commerce Degree Programme at the University of Dar es Salaam. And perhaps at IAA too;

Prof. Ken Edwards Chair in Accounting and Finance;

Now if one can sponsor a long term Prof. Ken Edwards Scholarship for an MBA student contracted to becoming a business studies academic it would be a real bonus.

Prof. Ken Edwards is survived by a widow, four daughters and two sons. He will be laid to rest on Saturday 28th March 2009 at Arusha.

Thanks kaka Assad for unfolding history of RIP kaka Joshua.

From your testament, it looks we all have been touched by this great man. I also like your statement that no one can stop you brothers and sisters for coming to honoring this great man; by hooks and crooks you shall be in Arusha on burial day - by all means necessary.. Am not sure on this, but it might happen that big shots down there in ‘Dar’ are not giving much respect to this great man, but was so much encouraged by your guts. Ahsante Mwl Assad na Karibuni sana.

I fully support your ideas and suggestions about initiating programmes of honoring this great man. This shows that people are not looking on what you wear (big suits) but are looking on what you preach and act. It is Mwl. Nyerere kind of life. Let’s think about it.

The prof was very exceptional, he was man of people. He liked every body and wished all of us to have better life and he particular believed that with education you can conquer the world. If you shall be in Arusha, you will hear more about Kaka Joshua. He lived a very simple life and dedicated most of his time and resources to the needy. Prof was not only dealing with intellectual level like Business Schools and the like but also was supporting other families on paying school fees for their children. I really salute this great man and was on his place on last Sunday and promise to be there on burial day.

Like other chaps above said about you Assad, you are among the great and young leaders of today. If possible, find time to compile Joshua biography and promise to be the first to buy it for my family. I also admire your life styles and wishing you all much blessings and humbly praying to the Almighty God to guide and protect you all on your way to Arusha.

Let’s give thanks and praises to the Almighty for having this great man for 64 years on this terrible world, praying to Almighty to protect his family and guide his well disciplined and very bright sons and daughters and kindly request today youth to hear and listen what he was preaching and possible mimic. Tubadilike and Kuiga yaliyo mema siku zote.
Blessings;
Peace and Love to you all.

  1. Common sense would suggest IAA would give this great guy an honor and call their school Ken Edwards at very least.
    But guess what, common sense does not always prevail in my country. Unless if you are a politician or a fisadi.
    Rest in Peace Rasta man .
    You have made yourself pride and accomplish what you really intended to do. hope,just hope someone will learn something from this great man.
    Thanks for dedicating your life to your brothers and sisters have a Peace and be sure we are all coming anyway.

  2. True people never get TZ citizenship, but fisadi and other crupious people will. They did not see that for Prof Ken, and among them many were the students who he lectured and ended up kumbatia mafisadi.
    May be if he choosed to educate in America , by now he would have been a true citizen of US and roam around the world freely with prejudice of being an American.
    Tanzania is a bull of shit country, if not a "bull shit" place and that what sometimes I feel and want to say,about my beloved country, especially when stupid, uneducated, tapelis and fisadis are easily getting waht they want. many og them afterwards leave the country to Canada, US and UK to eat their sweet that they ripe from the stupid TZ fellows.
    God bless this guy and dont let him pass hopelessly without being given his passport and laid at least to rest as a Tanzania citizen. The citizenship that his daughters and son will sometimes enjoys as the children of a immigrant who came all the way from Jamaica to educate the poor Tanzanian how to manage their finance and market their goods.
    RIP rasta- Ken

  5. All these were not known probably to most if not all faculty of commerce students. This is one of the few calibre our leaders. It is time to dig out whats there in. Death doesnt mean the end of rights. We prefer clarification from the Government what was hidden. Possibly the passport could have saved him from death. Otherwise not far from now we will see the DJs coming and run the unconstitutionally country ( I have no problems with eleceted DJs). We have to stand firmly to liberate our nation from those who are irresponsible.
    We all owe the nation. We have to have something to be proud of. Who else has done something for our poor Tanzanians. Is it that, we are satisfied with the progress of our country. Indeed, I dont mean to outst the rulling of law.
    Lets stand firm to congratulate all those who are for the nation regardless of their parties.
    Lets everybody evaluate what (s)he has done for the country?
    Lets fight the evil people who are corrupt?
    Lets build the system that is responsible to its citizen.
    Lets stand against all leaders coming into power by corruption.
    Lets fight all sources of discriminations.
    Lets evaluate the capability of all people who are responsible for the society.
    Prof could have enjoyed more in other country than Tanzania. We thank and pray for me. We have enjoyed what he laid at the FCM. We will always remember him for his deed.
    Lastly thanks Dr Assad, hope your following the trend. We want one day to write something about you

  6. What a commited man is Prof Ken. May you rest in peace!

    How could our authority do that inhuman disgrace to the great don? Is this what we pay someone who devotes his whole life for the betterment of OUR poor peasants' children?! Had he been merely a politician or Fisadi spreading lies and cash instead of valuable knowledge to our kids, then he would be honoured! What a shame to our authorities for denying a passport for a Great son of the land!! What did UDASA do address this serious concern as they did fo Jnenerali Ulimwengu's saga?

    Long live Ken Edward's ideas and initiatives!

  7. It’s a touching testimonial of a man who has devoted his entire life to the wellbeing of our nation. Truly he is a son of great land of Africa. An outstanding lecturer, devoted his entire life for his roots, regardless of the opportunities he had on hand.
    He is a true patriot and an example of true commitment to the advancement of Africa.
    May be his life will be documented by a movie to be inspired by generations to come.

  8. Very sad indeed. I know of a similar case of a born and bred Tanzanian who served in and retired honourably from our armed forces- from Tanganyika Rifles to TPDF; but when it came to issuing him a new digitised passport he was, and probably is still being, given the run around.It is for such cases, for such people and for such reasons that I really hope that there is justice in an afterlife. God help us Tanzania.

  9. Mie natoa shukrani kwa balozi wa zain na Dr Assad kushiriki angalau tumepata huu wasifu. Mwanzo maelezo ni mazuri na yanaonyesha jamaa kilikuwa kichwa kweli.

    Hapo mwishoni ni very and very big sad news, tokea 70s,80s,90s and na mwishowe kajifia halafu ukiuliza hapo immigration wanaweza kusema ilikuwa inashughulikiwa.

    Prof. Ken ndiyo amekwisha ondoka, basi tuliobaki somo tumekwishalipa, tumuenzi kadri itakavyowezekana.
    Ahssnte sana Prof Assad kwa maelezo yako.

    -Nkwame Nkuruma
    -Thomas Sankara.

Out of all the parents in the neighbourhood, he was the only one who supported us and came to watch us play, wazee wengine walitupiga marufuku kucheza eti tunawapigia kelele.

Yes, I remember well the scandal with the big shot's daughter. He didn't care about who was who but integrity...not that it helped his popularity. I hope that he is awarded a posthumous Passport. He loved Tanzania so much!

    Back to unpatriotic Tanzanians in various authorities in the country! I think you all should sit down and reevaluate yourselves about the way you analyze things and act on various issues brought before your tables. Why are you guys always thirst for material things instead of human dignity? You need to value life more than anything else. Unfortunately, that is not the case in my Country Tanzania, which is currently leaded by crooks. The leaders and politicians are always after money. They do not care whether that money is dirty or not! All they do is Chukua Chako Mapema , a.k.a CCM. They are busy stealing and forget about putting the nation first by working hard and dedicate their intelligence in building Tanzania and make it a better nation. That is why some of them did that shameful injustice treatment to the great fellow Tanzanian with Jamaican Origin, Late Prof. Ken Edwards. Shame to all of them-fisadiz. I always believe that what goes around comes around. Therefore, I suggest that you do to others what you would have them do to you. Otherwise, you are going to face some serious consequences later on in life or even in your life after death. Remember, whoever person you meet on your way up, you may meet the same person on your way down.
