By Emmanuel Tayari

Today the world knows a lot about President Nelson Mandela but seemingly conveniently always forgetting that Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the late Tanzanian President, was the person behind Mandela Success.

Without Nyerere effort's we probably would have had the Mandela's success story as we have it today, as presented to the world. Let me walk you down the history lane to refresh our recollection.

In 1959 Mwalimu Nyerere together with Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, founded the Anti-Apartheid Movement in Britain. In 1980s during the campaign for South Africa Nuclear Disarmament, the movement had individual membership of 6,000 people, and attracted 700 organizations, including the Labour, Liberal and Social Democratic parties affiliated. These together represented more than 18 million people.

This implies that whatever success Mandela is afforded it was because of Mwalimu Nyerere's high involvement which made it happen. In sum Tanzania could have had a better economy today if it did not accept sacrifices in building the future and freedom fighting for the region of southern Africa. Mwalimu Nyerere was true to his principles and his vision. He empowered ANC and Mandela. At the end, his vision of a liberated Africa was achieved.

Mwalimu Nyerere's story is one of the best untold stories as far as African politics are concerned. We need to promote his legacy further. Africa needs Nyerere's kind of thinking in Leadership more than Aid for now. Africa needs high quality leadership, and more of a best leadership story like the one of Mwalimu Nyerere. This could be inspirational for young people to offer alternative leadership to Africa. This is crucially important in saving the continent from poverty.

In conclusion, we as Tanzanian Edinburgh Community Association (TzECA) believe that people need to hear more about Mwalimu's legacy. One film recently shown in Edinburgh at Film House - which sold out, do attest to this belief of ours. Think of it, can Nelson Mandela speak more about Nyerere?

We think so! In remembering Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere's legacy, the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with Tanzania High Commission in London along with the Tanzania Edinburgh Community Association(TzECA) have joined forces in organizing an International High Level Conference which will be held from the 9th - 11th November 2009 in Edinburgh, UK.

We as Tanzanians and peace lovers, would be greatly honoured if you will join us by covering these memorable events as we mark and remember the life of this great son of Africa. Your coverage can reflect on his legacy as one of the best African statesman of our time. Spread the word, let his story be heard all over the world.

  2. This article but is a misleading one. Nyerere did not make Mandela the hero he is today. Inspite of both of them being men of principles with burning desire for justice, these two men very different personalities. Mandela was a militant who was not prepared to compromise his militancy, and Nyerere was not. In fact Nyerere has never thrown even a stone to the oppressors.

Mandela was a natural born rebel, who ran away from his guardian in protest of marrying a girl she didn't fancy at all. Mandela was caught with a revolver as a youngman before he even entered politics. Being caught with a gun is not a credit, but it shows that he lived and understood the reality on the ground, as far as the life in the street of johannerburg is concern.

With his personality and character, Mandela could have run any country on planet earth; whereby Nyerere wouldn't be able to run Nigeria.

Im in no way trying to lessen Nyerere's credentials as a statesman, freedom fighter or a politician; he did not contribute one bit to the making of the Great Nelson Mandela.

  4. Without any doubt NYERERE was a great leader of our time in Africa, his story was and is still not told simply because he was not a friend/darling of Western impriolist/capitalist powers, who were by then busy stealing resources from sleeping African continent. You know what? CHINA with nearly typical same model of political economy we had back then they are very far now second to USA with great test of modern life and brilliant consumption power. Young people chilling out enjoying dream life, these all due to rigid economic foundation built by their fore fathers. WE USED TO CALL THEM MAO TSE TUNG and CHUI EN LAI, some old folks I guess they know these magnificient TWO, we used to have everything in our shops back then (1960s to 1980s) wih MADE IN CHINA lebals, every thing you could imagine were coming from China. These guys they started very far with the same weird politics. I guess we had sticked to our guns we would have been very far by now for certain.

  5. Oliver Tambo is the most undercredited than Nyerere. He is the one whorecruited Mandela to join ANC regardless the fact that he stepped down to let Mandela became the first black president of South Africa. Before we give all the blessing annoitiness to Nyerere of Mandela becomings we shuold at least give respect to the other legends who pioneer the lebaration of Africa. Oliver Tambo started way back before Nyerere but he didnt get the recognition he deserved. THAT'S ALL I"M SAYING

  6. I WAS ALWAYS THINKING THAT I WAS AMONG THE VERY FEW LAYMEN WHO BELIEVED THAT TANZANIANS DESERVED MORE FROM THEIR EFFORTS.
IT IS NOT ALWAYS ADVISABLE TO TALK ABOUT THE MISTAKES DONE BY A LATE PERSON IN THE COMMUNITY. HOWEVER, FOR THE SAKE OF EVALUATING OURSELVES, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE INTENSIVELY LOOK AT OUR PAST, AND ESPECIALLY WHAT OUR PREVIOUS LEADERS DID.
I WAS A GROWN UP PERSON, OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND, WHEN THE FIRST PRESIDENT WAS ON THE THRONE, AND I DID EXPERIENCE THE SUFFERING!! THAT IS WHY I WAS ALWAYS THINKING THAT WE WEREN'T AS POOR AS WE WERE MADE TO BELIEVE.
AND NOW TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE, POSSIBLY MORE EDUCATED THAT I AM, CONFIRMING THAT THE COUNTRY'S WEALTH WAS BADLY MISSPENT JUST TO SUPPORT THE OUTSIDERS IN THE NAME OF AFRICAN LIBERATION, IS EVEN MORE PAINFULL. I CAN NEVER SWALLLOW THIS.
I HAVE NEVER EVER IN MY LIFE THOUGHT OF A FATHER WHO WOULD SUFFER HIS OWN CHILDREN FOR THE SAKE OF FAVOURING HIS NEIGHBOURS.
    CHARITY ALWAYS BEGINS AT HOME.
THAT IS WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS.
THAT IS WHAT THE QURAN SAYS.
EVEN THE HOLY PROPHETS WERE ORDERED TO SAVE THEIR PEOPLE FIRST.
TANZANIA HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY FERTILE, PRODUCTIVE AND RICH COUNTRY. THE NATURAL RESOURCES WE HAVE BEEN REWARDED BY THE ALMIGHTY GOD WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE THE COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE SELF-SUFFICIENT. THINGS WENT REALLY WRONG IN THE LATE SEVENTIES AND EARLY EIGHTIES, WHEN OUR "HERO", MWALIMU, FOR THE REASONS ONLY HE KNEW BEST, DECIDED TO THROW AWAY OUR LITTLE WEALTH TO HIS FRIENDS, HIS COMRADES.
WE WERE NOT ADVISED ABOUT IT. NEITHER WERE WE INFORMED. WE DID NEVER CHOOSE TO SUFFER TO LIBERATE OTHERS IN AFRICA.
THE AMERICANS, THE BRITONS, THE FRENCH, THE GERMANS AND ALL OTHER SO CALLED RICH COUNTRIES WOULD DO WHATEVER THEY CAN TO MAKE SURE THEY KEEP BEING RICH. YOU ALL KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING CURRENTLY IN THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE RESULT OF THAT FACT. THE CHINESE NOW ARE ALL OVER AFRICA WITH THE SAME AIM, TO STRENGTHE THEIR ECONOMY. THEY OFFER LITTLE TO ACHIEVE MORE.
BUT "MWALIMU", TO THE CONTRARY WAS THE OPPOSITE. HE STOLE FROM HIS HOUSE, THE NOT STRONG HOUSE, TO GIVE IT OUT TO THE STRANGERS.
WHAT WAS IT? GENEROSITY? KINDNESS? NEIGHBOURHOOD? I CAN'T FIGURE OUT.
TO ME, "MWALIMU" REMAINS "A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION" TO TANZANIANS AND SHOLUD NEVER BE PRAISED FOR HIS DECISION TO "LIBERATE" AFRICA.

  7. When you asked if Mandela could speak more of Mwalimu, I thought he was going to be part of this or something. He didn't even contribute to the publication. I still don't understand the silence of Mandela (or maybe I do) regarding Mwalimu's legacy and his contribution towards the end of apartheid in SA. I just wish he would make a tell-all book, interview or something, maybe then some of these knuckleheads who speak ill of Mwalimu every chance they get will finally give him his due respect.

It's easy for a figure like Mandela to be celebrated, remember he is in the same category with people like Dr. King, even if he had a militant side to him. On the other hand, Mwalimu wouldn't take shit from anybody (excuse my russian), a figure like Nyerere knew a long time ago that his legacy will be buried and few will embrace or even know about it, and I think he would be comfortable with that.

  13. Mwalimu Nyerere was indeed a humanist. He loved his people so much that he didn't want anyone to govern them apart from himself for over two decades. He never benefited from his leadership but he never suffered either. There was no freedom of any under Nyerere and as a businessman under his administration, I was frustrated for not being able to feed the people because his government outlawed ownership of foreign currencies and denied businessmen permission to import food or machinery to make our industries more productive, thus killing our economy.

Though Mandela started out as a communist rebel fighting for the justice of his people and took a while to change his political beliefs, he never nationalised nor denied his people political freedom when he became a President of the new South Africa and soon after he step aside and let others govern.

It still amazes me to hear about the great leadership of Mwalimu Nyerere when our economy totally collapsed under his totalitarian socialist leadership and he was forced to beg for food aid from China and the former USSR. Is it only me who remembers food rationing here?

  18. tuache uwongo! tuache uwongo! nyerere is not a man behind mandela success. mandela rose up himself, was jailed alone and was freed from prison alone. he only visited tanzania just like anybody else. tanzanias never helped the process of freedom in south africa, they only attempted to do so. tuache kutafuta mitaji ya kisiasa au kipesa kwa kutumia jina la nyerere.

perhaps we are forgetting that mandela gained the fame of statesmanship because he was jailed for such long. the difference between other freedom fighters in SA is his long stay in prison. hakuna unyerere hapo. people are fascinated, impressed and guided by his firm stance before prison and in prison. in the 1970s he was once offered a chance to be released from prison on the condition that he should distance himself from politics, but he refused to sell his dignity. how did nyerere contribute the refusal? mandelas great fame is culled from his long stay in prison. labda mkisema nyerere aliwashawishi makaburu wamfunge mandela ntawakubalia.

nyere was just a man from musoma who was clever enough to study in the uk before many tanzanias, who happened to lead a country with less-educated people. he was good in manipulating and twisting things the way he wanted because he was ahead of others academically. look now he can manipulate some people even from the grave. Loh! he wasnt a saint.\

nyerere would ramain one of africa's statesmen but not one and only. after all he is the most unknown statesman outside tanzania.

  20. untold story? untold to whom? for what? i don't think there is nothing we don't know about Nyerere. Mr Emmanuel, do you know Nyerere smoked cigarette? if you don't know that then you (and your cohorts who want cheap popularity)need to be educated by us, not you educating us. you seem not to know anything about Nyerere.

the rest of the world to whom you want to project 'your Nyerere' is not as lazy as you are. they read widely. if the Nyerere you want to project would have the imaginary qualities you want us embrace, they would have written and said them. the Nyerere you want to hoist is not the one we know. we know the one who cannot even tie the shoe laces of Nelson Mandela, let alone be made who Mandela is by Nyerere.

  22. Jamani kasomeni kitabu cha Godfrey Mwakikagile cha 'Nyerere and Africa:End of an Era' mtapata details zote za mapambano ya uhuru, mandela na nyerere, wapiganaji wa uhuru walioishi tanzania akiwemo che guevara n.k. Nadhani upuuzi mwingi watu wanaosema kuhusu Mwalimu utaisha watu wakijua facts.

Nyerere katika hotuba yake October 22, 1959 (kabla ya uhuru), alisema, 'we the people of tanganyika, would like to light a candle and put it on top of mount kilimanjaro which would shine beyond our borders giving hope where there was despair, love where there was hate, and dignity where before there was only humiliation'. Kama mnavyojua, haya maneno yalirudiwa wakati Marehemu Nyirenda alipoweka mwenge mlimani.

Kuna mengi ya kunukuhu kutoka kwenye kitabu, lakini, nawashauri kasomeni.

  28. SPEECH BY PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA AT A BANQUET IN HONOUR OF JULIUS NYERERE, Johannesburg, 17 October 1997
    Master of Ceremonies; Mwalimu Julius Nyerere; Mr Nicky Oppenheimer; Honoured guests;
It is a great pleasure to share in this occasion honouring one of Africa's great patriots.

It is a humbling experience to recall the contribution that Mwalimu Nyerere has made to the liberation of our continent, and to freedom in South Africa.

This is the freedom fighter who heard Chief Luthuli's appeal and joined Trevor Huddleston in launching the Anti-Apartheid Movement in Britain in 1959; a leader whose decisive intervention at the Commonwealth Conference after the Sharpeville Massacre led to the exclusion of apartheid South Africa.

I had the personal privilege of meeting him many years ago, in 1962, when I visited Tanzania seeking help as we embarked on the armed struggle. Then, as now, I was struck by his lucid thoughts; his burning desire for justice everywhere; and his commitment to Africa's interests.

After the independence of Tanzania, Mwalimu, as its head of state, continued to play an important role in the struggle for justice and democracy not only in Africa, but throughout the world.

The people of Tanzania gave unstinting support to the liberation of South Africa. They gave recognition of the most practical kind to the principle that our freedom and theirs were interdependent.

Today, as free nations we have joined hands in recognition of the interdependence of our countries, our region and our continent in the achievement of peace and prosperity.

It is in this spirit that we affirm our support for Julius and the people of Tanzania in the goals they have set for themselves.

The expansion of economic ties of trade and investment between Tanzania and South Africa, and indeed between all the countries of the region, is an objective to which South Africa is firmly committed.
