The SADC top brass has defended election of South African President Jacob Zuma and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete to head the SADC’s Organ on politics, defense and Security co-operation as chairperson and deputy respectively saying the two presidents have made a mark in resolving conflicts in Africa.
Speaking to reporters shortly after closing the SADC heads of State and Government Summit here yesterday, the Angolan President, Eng. Eduardo dos Santos said the role of two presidents in resolving conflicts in Africa is unquestionable.
A reporter from Zimbawe wondered why should President Zuma, a current mediator in Zimbabwe standoff double as a Chair of the SADC’s Organ on Politics, Defense and Security co-operation that oversees peace initiatives in Zimbabwe.
“Elections of President Zuma and Kikwete to lead the organ is a demonstration of the regional’s affirmation to resolve conflicts in the SADC region and the confidence we have to the two leaders” the Angolan President told the press at the Talatona convention Centre here.
The Angolan President, who assumed the SADC presidency yesterday, said however, that the region was largely peaceful noting that right strategies and mechanism to resolve pending conflicts have been put in place.
On Madagascar, he said SADC’s organ on Politics, Defense and Security has been mandated to assist the mediator Joackim Chissano, former Mozambican President to engage stakeholders to the conflict to fully implement the roadmap for peace.
The Summit also took note of the progress made in the implementation of peace deal in Zimbabwe and urged the parties to the global political agreement to remain committed to the roadmap to resolve the pending issues.
The Summit also pledged to provide urgent humanitarian food, water, medical, and clothing and shelter supplies to the affected people in the republic of Somalia and directed the SADC Secretariat to co-ordinate the urgent delivery of these supplies.
