The Swedish Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania, and also accredited to the EAC bloc, H.E. Katarina Rangnitt, today paid a courtesy call on Amb. Liberat Mfumukeko, the Secretary General of the East African Community. The Secretary General and his guest discussed, among other things, how to strengthen cooperation in deepening the regional integration agenda.
During their discussions, Amb. Mfumukeko briefed Swedish Envoy on the progress being made in the implementation of the reforms he instituted in the EAC Organs and Institutions in May 2016 that target cost reduction in the EAC projects and programmes.
The EAC Chief disclosed that the reforms, which target savings up to US$ 6 million in the Financial Year 2016/2017, were already showing positive results. In the first three months of implementation between May and August 2016, the EAC is on record of saving US $588,768 in travel expenditures alone (DSA’s and ticketing) affirmed the Secretary General.
The Secretary General also briefed H.E Katarina Rangnitt on the status of EAC-EU-EPA; peace and security situation in Burundi; and the status of application of the Republic of South Sudan to join the EAC.
On her part, H.E. Rangnitt congratulated Amb. Mfumukeko for his appointment and noted the impressive progress in the EAC integration process. The Swedish Envoy pledged her country’s support towards successful integration agenda, adding that “Sweden will be happy to see transparency and proper audit of its resources to the EAC”.
