Following this year’s Barrick Taifa Gold Cup national basketball tournament, the Tanzania national teams which feature both the men’s and women’s sides now officially have coaches.
The four appointed officials will oversee the training of both teams and all other preparations ready for upcoming international tournaments.
A joint statement from team sponsor Barrick Tanzania and the Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) confirmed the new coaches as Bahati Mgunda and Evarist Mapunda for the men’s team and Salehe Zonga and Paschal Nkuba for the women’s side.
Commenting on the appointment of the four coaches, TBF Secretary General Lawrence Cheyo said, "We have all the confidence in the proven abilities of these four individuals and trust that their experience will lead to magnificent performance by our teams.
We are fully aware of how important this coming tournament is and we can only do our country justice if we return triumphant." Cheyo said.
The announcement of the national team coaches comes right on the back of this year’s Taifa Gold Cup which for the second year running has benefited from Barrick Gold Tanzania’s sponsorship.
To ensure the smooth and successful running of the tournament, the mining company poured a total of TShs.63 million, money that went into administration costs for TBF as well team expenses for regional teams that participated, from among whom the national teams were born.
On his part Barrick Tanzania Public Relations and Communications Manager Teweli Teweli expressed optimism in the new coaches and the national teams as a whole.
"This is an exciting moment for Barrick Tanzania as sponsor of the Taifa Gold Cup which produced the two national sides. The experience that our new coaches have will go a long way towards ensuring national success in basketball.
"Every keen follower of sports understands how big basketball is around the world and we are determined to elevate the game in Tanzania and beyond. Barrick Gold Tanzania stands shoulder to shoulder with TBF and the nation as a whole in support of our national team under the new coaches." said Teweli.
The men’s and women’s national teams will represent Tanzania in a regional tournament that will be held in Rwanda early next year.

Ningefurahi kusikia wahusika nao wakijiuzulu kwa hili kashfa. Mantutia aibu sisi wengine. Mhudumie familie zenu sio taifa...hamfai na mnakinaisha.
