The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has remitted 1.7bn/- to the Treasury collected from calls in October last year.
This follows completion of installation of the Telecommunication Traffic Monitoring System (TTMS).
The amount is from revenue that TCRA collected in one month from firms dealing in telecommunications outside Tanzania whose subscribers made calls to telephone subscribers in Tanzania.
According to TTMS regulations, the government is entitled to at least 28 percent of incoming calls from outside the country.
Speaking during the handing over of the cheque, TCRA Director General Prof John Nkoma told Finance Minister Saada Mkuya that TTMS was installed in October 2013 and started work immediately.
According to Prof Nkoma, the TTMS uses the Build Operate and Transfer system (BOT). He said the system has managed to increase government revenues from the former eight percent to the present 28 percent of the money one pays per minute when calling Tanzania.
As the government gets 28 percent, the TCRA gets at least 25 percent of the money one pays for making a call to Tanzania. Further, the company that collaborated with TCRA to install the system is entitled to at least 20 percent of the revenues.
TCRA handed over another cheque of 1.6bn/- to the Treasury in line with the Finance Law of 2008 that obliges institutions that collect revenues to submit to the government ten percent of such revenues. Meanwhile, Innocent Mungy – TCRA’s Manager Corporate Communications, said in an email to The Guardian:
“For the months of November and December last year as well as January this year, we await to be paid by each operator in Tanzania given the number of minutes terminated in their network.
“The process requires verification and calculations in terms of the agreed formula.”
Speaking at the function, Finance Minister Saada Mkuya commended TCRA for installing the system successfully and starting to pay dividends.
She urged the TCRA to ensure that it motivates workers manning the system so that they continue to collect more revenue for the government.
