Hosts and defending champions Tanzania made a flying start in the eighth edition of the EAC military netball competition with smashing 113-10 win over Burundi at the JKU ground in Zanzibar yesterday.
Tanzania’s towering Goal Shooter (GS) Mwanaidi Hassan was a thorn in Burundi’s defence .Burundi’s Goalkeeper Mutoni Bertiel was completely overshadowed by Mwanaidi’s swift and accurate goals.
In another netball match, Uganda walloped Rwanda 30-12.
In soccer, a second half early goal by Brian Birgen gave Kenya 1-0 victory over hard-fighting Uganda. Both teams displayed brilliant soccer skills and all made several near misses until in the 53rd minute when striker Birgen sealed Uganda’s fate.
In the opening match on Wednesday, Tanzania whipped Burundi 3-1. In Hanball, Uganda and Kenya fought a 26-26 draw in a close and exciting tussle. Uganda had taken an early lead of 17-8 against Kenya. However, the never-say-die Kenyans came back like injured buffaloes in the second half and leveled the score and even went ahead by 26-25 in the dying minutes. The Ugandans did not give and managed an injury time equalizer.
Kenya’s goal star was Nicholas Ireri with eight shots whereas for Uganda were Mohamed Suleiman and Alworanga Chester with six goals each to their credit.In Basketball, Tanzania defeated Rwanda 67-56 in another thrilling match and Burundi defeated Kenya 45-41.
The two-week EAC military games will climax on 31 October. This year’s theme is:” Is one people, one destiny through EAC Military Games and Cultural Event 2014”.
