DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA – September 26, 2015.  The U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has released a statement indicating that Tanzania will pass the FY 2016 Control of Corruption Indicator.  The statement is available below and on the MCC website here:  https://www.mcc.gov/news-and-events/release/pressstmt-092615-tanzania-passes-fy16-corruption-indicator
The $472.8 million compact, when approved by the Board, will promote increased access to reliable electricity in Tanzania and will strengthen the energy sector overall.  U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania Mark Childress noted that “I am pleased by the news that the process towards finalizing a compact will continue.  However, while Tanzania has passed the required indicator, further efforts towards combatting corruption are essential for successful implementation of the compact, improving the business climate, and ensuring the public’s trust in its government and institutions.”

MCC Statement on Tanzania Passing the Fiscal Year 2016 Control of Corruption Indicator
WASHINGTON DC - September 26, 2015.  On September 17, MCC’s Board of Directors (“Board”) indicated that it would vote on a compact with Tanzania if the country scored above the relevant median in the Worldwide Governance Indicators’ latest annual Control of Corruption index.
That index is now publicly available and Tanzania has scored above the relevant median, and therefore will pass the Control of Corruption indicator on MCC’s forthcoming fiscal year 2016 scorecard.
Accordingly, the Board will vote on whether to approve the proposed compact.  Projects funded under the compact will need to meet the agency's economic analysis standards.  Should the Board approve the compact, signing is expected to occur sometime in 2016.
MCC takes seriously all of its country partners’ commitments to combat corruption.  While Tanzania passes the Control of Corruption indicator, MCC will continue to monitor the Government of Tanzania’s efforts to combat corruption.

MCC expects that Tanzania’s October 25 general election will be free and fair, consistent with the importance MCC places on democratic rights.
