As a powerful global voice for Girls Education, Zuriel has presented her second annual DUSUSU Award to Her Excellency First Lady of Kenya, in a colorful ceremony at the State House, in Nairobi.
Earlier in the year, she presented her Gender Minister Award to Hon Nana Oye Lithur of Ghana. Last year in 2014, the Gender Minister Award went to Hon Mireille Martins of Mauritius, while the First Lady Award went to Her Excellency Salma Kikwete of Tanzania. The Award recognizes Gender Ministers advancing women's issues in Africa, and First Ladies making a strong case for Girls Education in their countries.
The search for 2016 Awardees has begun.
THE ZURIEL PHEANOM
Some seek power, to become influential. Others by virtue of a "steel small voice" become influential at such a young age, and thus, powerful. Zuriel has become a powerful voice on the global civil society scene. In December 2013, she was named at age 11 in New Africa Magazine's annual 100 Most Influential African's List, along side 3 serving African Presidents.
ELLE Magazine named her in March 2015 in their annual ranking of "33 Women Who Changed The World", and she has been featured on CNN, BBC, CNBC Power Lunch, Bloomberg TV and Forbes Magazine at age 10. New York's Business Insider named her the Most Powerful 11 Year Old In The World in April 2014.
Zuriel has focused on doing 2 simple things - making the case for girls education in Africa, and making compelling films that show a positive Africa.
She is on her way to Namibia, to spend some time with the children of the "San Tribe", better known to the rest of the world as the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert.
