January 21st, 2019: Contract agreement for the construction of a new road bridge along Bandari Road of Gerezani is scheduled to be signed between Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company (SMCC) on 22nd January, 2019 (Tue).

The project is funded by the Government of Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as a Japanese Grant.

The project will replace the existing 2-lane bridge by a new 4-lane bridge in response to increasing traffic volume together with a rapid economic growth of the United Republic of Tanzania. In addition, its well-considered design can accommodate a new service route of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and Standard Gauge Railway passing under the bridge.

SMCC is a Japanese contractor which successfully completed the first flyover project in Tanzania (Mfugale Flyover) in September last year. Mfugale Flyover demonstrates Japanese quality infrastructure by its well finished concrete structure.

Moreover, SMCC achieved a safety record that is more than 2.5 million man/hour safety record (no minor/fatal injuries for both pedestrian, motorist and workers of the project was recorded during its 35-month construction period) and completion ahead of the original schedule.

Moreover in response to increasing demand, the city of Dar es Salaam is remarkably developing.  Since the port of Dar es Salaam is under rehabilitation and improvement of its facilities, it is essential to widen the bridge located on the route connecting the port of Dar es Salaam to up-country areas and neighboring countries through the Central Corridor.

JICA continues to support comprehensive development of infrastructure of Dar es Salaam.
